Blackstones 1 - 2 Dunkirk
Our first away game after what happened during the week was a tough ask, as we only had 13 players available. Surprisingly, we had 16 available for Saturday’s away game, which was a massive positive for us.
We went back to basics for this game, using a formation we had employed in a few previous matches. All the players showed their courage, and we went into halftime leading 2-1. The halftime team talk was simple: if we didn’t concede, we’d win the game. The focus was on sticking to the basics and executing them well. We did just that. It was a tough game, but from our perspective, it was very positive. The team showed us what they are capable of and what the future could look like.
Midweek Away: Clifton All Whites 3 - Dunkirk 3
It was a mad game, to be honest. The pitch was horrendous, but credit must go to the players for staying in the game. We went into halftime losing 2-1 and felt quite unlucky to be behind. We knew the next goal would be key to pushing on, but things didn’t go to plan. We went 3-1 down just after halftime. However, we showed a "never give up" attitude, made a few changes that gave us more energy across the pitch, and managed to score two goals to equalize at 3-3.
We had two other massive chances, which on another day would have gone in. The players deserve all the credit—they never stopped, fought to the end, and wore their hearts on their sleeves. We were proud of them for pulling together and earning a creditable draw in such horrendous conditions.
As interim management, we’re very happy and proud of the lads for giving their all from Saturday to midweek.
Home Game: Dunkirk 3 - Retford United 4
Up against a team pushing for the title or playoffs, we wanted to show the fans and committee what we’re all about. We started really well, growing more confident as the half went on, getting into good positions, and moving the ball well. The players supported each other, and we went into halftime with a 3-2 lead, which gave us a fantastic opportunity to regroup and push on in the second half.
We came out strong, but Retford managed to get a third goal, levelling the score at 3-3. We changed formation and went for it. However, the official made a decision we still don’t understand, but that’s part of the game. Without officials, we wouldn’t be able to play, so full respect to them, though this particular freekick led to Retford’s fourth goal. We were disappointed but, being honest, we can take credit from this performance. We can hold our heads high and say we gave it everything, even changing formation to try and win. The lads were quality throughout the game, and we feel we deserved something from it. There were definitely more positives than negatives to take.
Overall, since the changes, there have been positives, and the lads have all stuck together through this difficult time. Sam and I are proud of all of them. They’ve shown the Dunkirk spirit, which is in the club’s DNA. Going forward, there’s a real sense of positivity and commitment from both the players and us as a management team. They deserve all the credit coming their way, and I’ve been honoured to be involved. I believe we’ve turned a corner now and will start moving up the table.
